“The Shield of Life” – Congo

Carved shield on whose surface is embossed a mask of the face of a man. The face is painted red, black, and white, symbolizing love, power, and communion with tribal ancestors, respectively. The entire shield is embellished with geometric shapes made of closely etched lines, representing strength and unity.
