“The Birds of Goodness” – Nigeria

Mask/statue. On the bottom half, painted red to symbolize love, are carved two Koko [Cuckoo?] birds, signs of livelihood and security. among Nigerian tribes holds that when a Koko bird perches on the top of a hut, it signifies good tidings.) The upper part of the statue is a mask painted white; the two protruding sticks for eyes symbolize wisdom and prognostication. The surface of each eye/stick is painted white to represent the communion with tribal ancestors. The head of the mask/statue is hollow, a symbol of man’s ability to direct his thoughts.
